Why it matters

Concrete, steel and low-E glass can turn a firefighter's radio into dead air. Florida law says your building has to fix that, and keep proving it, every year.

Under Florida Statute 633.202, existing high-rises had to apply for and then demonstrate compliance with minimum radio signal strength for fire department communications. New buildings are tested before they get a Certificate of Occupancy.

After that comes the part most owners do not hear about until an inspector shows up: annual testing, a retransmission agreement, and periodic recertification. We handle all of it.

How a BDA works

Outside signal in. Radio calls out.

A public safety BDA picks up the fire department's radio network on the roof, amplifies it both ways, and carries it to every floor. Watch the signal travel.

How it works

From the tower to a firefighter's radio, and back

How an ERRCS carries a firefighter's radio signalA public safety radio tower on the left sends signal to a donor antenna on the building roof. Cable runs to a bi-directional amplifier and battery in the top-floor equipment room, then down a riser to indoor antennas on every floor, where a firefighter's handheld radio now works. Signal flows both ways.Downlink: tower to radios insideUplink: radios back to the tower123456

From dead zones to signed off.

Your Fire Marshal divides each floor into a grid and tests every cell. General areas typically need 90% coverage, critical areas like stairwells and the fire command center need 99%. This is what our BDA does to that grid.

How a BDA project runs

Seven steps. You always know which one you are on.

Others rely on assumptions and change orders. We survey first, design to your local Code from day one, and keep you posted at every step.

STEP 01

Preliminary assessment and survey

Our technicians run a detailed RF survey, find the weak spots and map coverage onto your building's floor plans, so you know if you need a BDA before you spend on one.

STEP 02

System design, signed and sealed

Using your plans, the scan results and your local requirements, we draft a design for your review. Once approved, our licensed professional engineers stamp it.

STEP 03

AHJ review and approval

The survey and design go to your building department, Fire Marshal and Prevention Bureau. We speak their language, which is why approvals do not stall.

STEP 04

Permitting

We pull every permit so installation can start on schedule, not three weeks after it was supposed to.

STEP 05

Professional installation

Our state-licensed electrical contractors install the BDA, antennas and cabling with Code-compliant materials and placement.

STEP 06

Acceptance testing

We test every grid cell against Code, typically 90% general and 99% critical-area coverage, and coordinate the DAQ test with your Fire Department.

STEP 07

Permit renewal and maintenance

Florida Codes require ongoing maintenance and annual recertification. Our support agreement and recertification process is included in every BDA proposal.

Installed once. Passing every year.

A BDA is a life safety system. It gets a check-up, a retransmission agreement and a recertification, the same as your fire alarm.

The BDA Doctor mascot, a Signal technician holding a tablet

Already have a BDA? We keep it healthy.

Most BDA problems surface the worst way: a fire alarm trouble signal, a first responder in an emergency, or a Fire Marshal at inspection. Our BDA Doctor team finds the root cause and fixes it, whoever installed the system.

Diagnostics and repair

Programming, headend, cabling and documentation reviewed until we find the cause. Then repair, retune or replace, with your approval.

Proactive maintenance

Annual evaluations with detailed records on file, so issues get fixed on your timeline and budget, not the inspector's.

Code-required retransmission and SLA

We become your designated local service provider for repairs, annual testing and five-year recertification.

When is your next BDA test due?

Enter the month your system was last tested or accepted. We will show the next annual test, how many days you have, and whether it is time to book.

Missed one? It happens more than you would think. A failed or overdue system is fixable, and the earlier we see it, the cheaper it is.

Where does your building stand?

Four quick questions. A Signal project manager reviews your answers and calls you back with a plain-English next step, usually the same business day.

  • Whether your building is likely to need a BDA
  • What your county and AHJ will ask for
  • A realistic timeline to sign-off

Questions we hear every week

FAQ

Why should I choose Signal for my project?

Signal has served Florida with communications expertise since 1991, rooted in public safety as a Motorola Channel Partner. We are a dedicated communications specialist, not a general IT or AV provider, and our credentials include NFPA, the Enterprise Wireless Association, the Florida Fire Marshals Association, iBwave, NICET, ISO and FCC GROL.

Does my building need a BDA?

Only a signal survey can tell you. If coverage falls below Code, your local Authority Having Jurisdiction will run its own verification and decide whether a BDA is required. We start every project with that survey, so you never buy a system you do not need.

Our BDA failed inspection. What now?

Call us. Our BDA Doctor team works on systems we did not install every week. We diagnose the root cause, give you a written path to compliance, and coordinate the re-test with your Fire Department.

What happens after the system is installed?

Local Code typically requires an annual Retransmission Agreement with a qualified BDA service provider, annual testing and periodic recertification. Our support agreement and recertification process is included in all BDA proposals.

What financing or purchasing options do you offer?

CapEx or OpEx (sold as a service, with zero capital requirements). Government and education clients can buy through Insight Public Sector as a preferred OMNIA partner. We accept check, ACH and credit card, and radio rentals start at one month.
